Terry’s Story (by Jean Beaney - wife)

Created by Neil 4 years ago

Terry was born on Wednesday 7th February 1934 in Dorset as his father was a groom to an Army Colonel.
He moved to Earls Colne when he was 7 months old and lived in the area ever since, going to the Primary School and then Halstead School.

He was very interested in aircraft and joined the local Air Cadets.  When he left school he obtained an apprenticeship as a carpenter with Bones, Builder of Colne Engaine. He spent his working life as a carpenter working on all the major sites in and around Colchester such as the University of Essex, Lion Walk Precinct and the bridges over the new A12.

He did 2 years National Service in the RAF based at RAF Tangmere in Sussex and also spent some time in Cyprus around the time of the Suez crisis.  A few years ago he was reunited with some of the friends he made in the RAF at this time and found they now lived locally so they met regularly for a “pie and a pint” and also paid a sentimental visit to the RAF Museum at Tangmere.  He loved visiting airshows in the area and some of Neil’s fondest memories are of taking him to Duxford and other Air Museums and for a present Neil had his name placed on the wing of the recently restored Vulcan bomber.

In 1966 he married Jean and they moved to Wivenhoe.  Terry’s wish was to build his own bungalow and he did this in his spare time on land at his family home.

In 2018 he was diagnosed with bowel cancer and remained well until recently when he became bedridden and was cared for by carers.  His wish was to remain at his home and this he did until the end when he died peacefully and content without any pain or discomfort.
